March 31, 2011

Tomorrow is the first day of April. Everywhere I look I see poetry events. There are three at Lunenburg, MA Library:

April 14— a reading and discussion of these seven poems developed as a state-wide program from masspoetry.org

April 21 — the monthly meeting of the Louise Bogan Chapter of MSPS

April 25 — a public evening for thoughtful teens and adults to read beloved poems

Try your hand with a triolet. It’s a Medieval French form that is eight short lines with a particular rhyming scheme and refrain repetition like this:

A Triolet For Jays

A Awesome is the jay with feathers blue.

B His voice is loud as an old kazoo

a singing along with the tufted crew.

A Awesome is the jay with feathers blue

a he caws with the crows at the barbecue

b his feathers are brighter than a cockatoo.

A Awesome is the jay with feathers blue

B His voice is loud as an old kazoo

Welcome — Celebrate National Poetry Month

April is National Poetry Month. The Louise Bogan Chapter of the Massachusetts State Poetry Society is hosting an evening of reading beloved poems. The public is invited to read a favorite poem and to tell the audience why the poem is special: Monday evening, 6:30 pm, Lunenburg Library, Lunenburg, MA.

Poetry has so many different faces it can please the old  and the young, those who are troubled and those who are joyous, those who are introverted and those who thrive amidst throngs. It can take a moment or a lifetime to write a poem.

For this week list the contents of your car’s glove compartment or a desk drawer and call it a poem. Here’s an example:

The junk drawer is full

of stamps that every few years go stale

paper clips  that  no longer grab

note pads torn and smudged

needles that lost their thread

tape measures that never measured

pills fallen out of their boxes

addresses – no faces or names

all together not much to bother about

I’ll empty the drawer tomorrow
